About
I'm Jason. I go to shows in Kansas City and write about them.
That's the whole pitch, and it's rarer than it should be. The Pitch went monthly. Public radio's arts coverage got cut to the bone. The outlets that remain do good feature work, but almost nobody is consistently in the room on a Tuesday night writing down what actually happened โ who opened, what the crowd did, which song broke the place open, whether the new room's sound is as good as they say.
Kansas City has been a music town since before your grandparents โ it's the only city in the United States that UNESCO recognizes as a Creative City of Music. Charlie Parker learned to fly here. The Mutual Musicians Foundation has hosted late-night jams since 1917. And right now, tonight, there's a band at recordBar or The Ship or Knuckleheads playing the best set of their lives for sixty people.
Somebody should be writing it down. So I do.
What you'll find here
Show reviews โ first-person, from the floor, with my own
photos. Not press-pass writing; I bought a ticket because I wanted to be
there.
Venue stories โ the history and personality of the rooms
that make this city sound the way it does.
Artist coverage โ conversations with the people making
music in KC, before the rest of the world catches on.
The weekly pulse โ what's coming through town and what's
worth your night out.
The first era
Supplemental Sound ran once before โ reviews, local artist interviews, show photography, and a guest spot on Kansas City's Badass Records podcast. Life intervened, as it does. The First Era page honors that run. This is the second era: fewer shows, deeper writing.
Say hi
